You’re not lazy - you’re just taking a rest

Have we developed a culture where productivity is the right way to be? Where being busy and multi-tasking is a badge of honour?
I know it in myself - I feel better on days I am more productive and get things done (GTD).
But have we lost sight of what it means to be able to switch off and do less at times?
Increasingly I see people who come to my therapy sessions saying that they want to be more productive and motivated but they are struggling because they are sleeping badly, or feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or unable to switch off.
And this is where modern neuroscience kicks in in our session.
I explain that your brain needs rest to function well. Not just sleep - but mental rest, emotional rest, and nervous-system regulation. Without it, the brain struggles to process information, regulate emotions, and maintain balance.
Ironically, the harder we try to “push through,” the less effective our brain becomes.
If you’ve been brought up in a family or a relationship where rest is not seen as acceptable during the day, the idea of stopping may feel pretty uncomfortable to you. Resting can feel indulgent and slowing down as lazy.
But if I say to you that when you stop and rest your brain will have a chance to process emotions and thoughts, make sense of experiences and generate new ideas, then that actually is really useful work that our brain is doing during these times.

Making rest a habit
