Why am I giving myself such a hard time?

Almost every client I meet struggles with being kind to themselves.
They may not recognise it but in our first few sessions I notice a lot of self-criticism, self-judgement or self-deprecation.
They may use expressions like:
“I know this is stupid, but…”
“I’m no good at that”
“I’m not like my friends who are getting on with life”
“I’ve always been an anxious person”
When I ask the question "Would you say this to your friend?” their answer nearly always is “No, but I say this to myself.”
We know that being self-critical or having an inability to view ourselves or our behaviours kindly are not helpful ways to relate to ourselves, so why do we find it so hard to practise self-kindness and self-compassion?
In my new programme, Kind to Yourself, I explain why the brain is designed to be self-critical but how we can train ourselves to let go of the criticism and get back in control.
Your anxiety, shame or self-criticism doesn’t need you to fight against it - you need to be able to make friends with it and make it your ally.
It’s often a perception that self-criticism motivates us and stops us making future mistakes. But research shows the absolute opposite. Self-compassion actually increases motivation, resilience and learning from mistakes.
“If I’m kind to myself I’ll become lazy” - No, not true! Self-compassion doesn’t mean lowering standards or avoiding things. It means treating yourself like you would a friend - being your champion, your challenger, your force for good.
How will my Kind to Yourself help you?
I use a blend of solution-focused hypnotherapy and compassion-focused therapy to help you to cultivate the skills of self-compassion and self-kindness.
